Addressing Michigan’s Achievement Gap

The Great Lakes Comprehensive Center at AIR and the Michigan Department of Education together developed a series of research-based strategies to close the achievement gap for African-American males and has begun to pilot-test those strategies in 27 high-need schools.

Great Lakes was very pleased to support the June 27th ESSA Convening for all superintendents in the state. IDOE has developed a page devoted to Indiana's plans around ESSA and has included videos and other materials from the event. IDOE is also conducting an ESSA Listening Tour beginning in mid-September in Indianapolis. The full schedule is available on this webpage.

Michigan Develops State Plan for ESSA

The Michigan Department of Education explains how their approach to ESSA keeps students at the center and will help ensure that the state reaches the top 10 in education within the next ten years. Great Lakes is looking forward to helping MDE implement their plans and achieve their goals.

Deeper Learning Initiative

The Great Lakes and Midwest Regional Deeper Learning Initiative is a collaboration between the Great Lakes Comprehensive Center and the Midwest Comprehensive Center designed to help states identify, explore, and advance state-level policy, guidance, and supports that drive deeper learning practices.

The GLCC Achievement Resource Center offers resources to support educators in their efforts to help African American young men reach their full potential. Content is organized by five topic areas:

  • data trends and use,
  • instructional support,
  • models of success,
  • thought leaders, and
  • social emotional support.
